Full Moon Owl Hike on Saturday
Join a unique and not-too-scary nature walk on Saturday night under the full moon at Schiff Nature Preserve in Mendham. A guide will be on hand to summon Great Horned Owls, and participants may hear the calls returned. The moonlit hike takes place on February 4 from 5 to 6:30pm, and the cost is $10 per person. Schiff Nature Preserve’s Nature Center and main trailhead is located at 339 Pleasant Valley Road in Mendham.
As you walk along the wooded trails of the preserve, you will learn that the Great Horned Owls are active in the winter and are among the first to breed. These yellow-eyed predators earned the nickname of ‘winged tigers’ for their ability to quickly swoop down upon their prey. Eight types of owls live in New Jersey, although the Great Horned Owls are among the few that live here all year long.
The 423-acre Schiff Nature Preserve is located in both Mendham Township and Mendham Borough. The nature center is open to the public for environmental education, research and activities that promote the preservation of natural areas. Ongoing programs include nature walks like the Full Moon Hike on Saturday evening, an environmental book club, home school classes, birthday parties and more.
Consider visiting the charming village of Mendham before or after the Full Moon Hike. The historic Main Street is lined with some homes and businesses that date back to the Revolutionary War era. Our Mendham Office of Turpin Realtors is a great resource for local information on any topic, especially Mendham homes for sale and New Jersey Real Estate.
