Buddy Lane is a peaceful cul de sac located in the eastern portion of Mendham Township, an area that’s particularly sought-after since it’s convenient for commuters. This part of Mendham is closer to Morristown for Midtown Direct train service, where riders can catch a one-seat ride to midtown Manhattan. But did you know that Buddy Lane has a strong link to local history?
The present owner shared some interesting background history about how Buddy Lane was named, and it has a connection to one of Morristown’s oldest organizations. Morris Frank co-founded The Seeing Eye in 1929. He and Buddy, a female German shepherd, traveled all over the United States spreading the mission of The Seeing Eye and fighting for equal access for guide dog teams. Mr. Frank was a tireless advocate and effective spokesperson for the organization for many years. Buddy was bred and trained in Switzerland for Mr. Frank. Thereafter, all Mr. Frank’s Seeing Eye dogs were named Buddy and, in their honor, the name has been retired by The Seeing Eye.
The owner told us that Buddy Lane is a special place to him. “Buddy was Mr. Frank’s first Seeing Eye dog and Mr. Frank lived on Main Street in Brookside. All his dogs were named Buddy. My older children used to visit with Mr. Frank as we were neighbors. So you see, I have a fondness for Brookside and Buddy Lane, and this home and site. My eyes see things differently…because I know the history.” This piece of local lore explains how Buddy Lane honors each and every Buddy that Morris Frank knew and loved while living in Mendham.
