Description

The shining result of a decades-long historic preservation project, a residential compound in the Lower Fairmount section of Tewksbury Township subtly interweaves original design elements and thoughtful structural upgrades.  This 19th century collection of three one-and-a half story “eye-brow” window  buildings consists of a handsome country Greek Revival  residence, a three bay (plus one “lean-to” bay) carriage house,  and a “summer kitchen” suitable for future office, workshop or other creative purpose. Each of these structures was moved and reset on new foundations during the 1980 through 1988 time frame.   Located on over six bucolic acres, the site overlooks the Rockaway Creek, long considered one of the state’s finest trout streams.  A significant countryside property, this parcel is now available for the first time.

The c. 1835 main home was originally owned by the local gristmiller, so it reflects the prosperity of an entrepreneur during that time period.  A comprehensive restoration process by the present owners showcases meticulous attention to detail, right down to replicating the post-Colonial era paint colors. As exceptional stewards of the home, the owners gently ushered the 2,500 square-foot residence into the 21st century while restoring the original woodwork, plaster walls, wide board floors, hardware, fireplace mantles, period windows, formal staircase and Jersey winder stairs that make it an architectural gem.

The three bedroom, one-and-one-half bath center hall floor plan is enhanced by double parlors, a custom cherry kitchen with upper-end appliances, formal dining room and family room. Upstairs bedrooms share a full, updated bath. A heated, walkout basement with garage door access, accommodates four cars and provides 1,400 square feet of bright, dry and comfortable space to the layout, while open and screened porches take in pastoral views.  Future owners of this home can be confident that the “heavy lifting” has already been attended to, with all the requisite features in place for a comfortable, modern lifestyle.  Following the move of the house, all mechanical systems were replaced or updated to the highest of current standards, along with a new heating system and central air recently installed.   The fact that this home, as well as the outlying structures, are situated on new foundations, offers further peace of mind to the subsequent homeowner.

Two historic outbuildings on the scenic grounds have also been authentically restored.  A c. 1870 carriage house is clad in its original “German dropped siding” and capped by a cedar shingle roof. A one-bay extension was added to the rear, offering a total of four protected parking spaces for the car hobbyist or collector. Options exist for connecting the carriage and main houses to create an in-law suite or additional living space.  Also built around 1870, the summer kitchen would make a perfect office or workshop. Finished in cedar clapboard, the standing seam roof and skillfully crafted native stone-faced foundation lend a realistic note to the Currier & Ives surroundings of open meadows, tree rows, and stream frontage. Completing this compound is a 20’ x 54’ red pole barn added to the property in 1986.  Appearing as a rustic covered bridge-inspired design, this utilitarian structure provides ample covered storage.

Located on a winding country road, this Tewksbury compound is about 60 miles from either New York City or Philadelphia. A fine weekend retreat, home-based business, equestrian or multi-generational property, this rare offering truly represents the best of both worlds: a harmonious balance of the old and new enveloped in a most graceful countenance.
