Turn-of-the-Century Treasure

Positioned in the heart of Mendham’s captivating village, this lovely turn-of-the-century Victorian is steeped in local history. In the late 1800s, part of the home was used as a private school by the Babbitt sisters. Complete with a timeworn, hand-laid stone fence, steep gabled roof, Palladian style windows and a sweeping front porch, this historic home offers all the charm of a bygone era as well as a host of modern conveniences. Many character-filled features such as tin pressed ceilings, original stained glass windows, wainscoting, antique light fixtures and even a ‘secret room’ concealing a safe, lend character to this home.

The three-story home has hardwood floors on each level and gracious gathering spaces throughout. Formal dining and living rooms are graced with wood-burning fireplaces, bay windows and French doors opening to the front porch. The main living room has a small built-in stage area for a piano or other instruments.

An inviting kitchen is fitted with Rutt cabinetry, butcher block maple countertops, a converted antique stove, a Traulsen refrigerator and a Vulcan restaurant-size stove/oven. The quaint butler’s pantry off the kitchen has its own dishwasher and gas stove for smaller preparations. Completing this level is a full bathroom.

Four bedrooms and two full bathrooms occupy the second floor. Featured in the master bedroom is a columned room divider made of carved oak and the en-suite containing a claw foot tub, separate shower and heated floor. The third level presents a full-sized loft with cathedral ceilings and new windows, all ready for a more comprehensive conversion in the future.

From the rear of the house, a covered breezeway featuring a detachable glass wall leads to a massive five-door carriage house with a three-room loft containing a full bathroom. The carriage house is temperature-controlled and able to house up to ten cars. Car lift is negotiable.

This delightful home with all its wonderful rooms and sense of local history is a rare offering in a coveted Morris County location.

Mendham Borough, NJ real estate market

About Mendham

Ranking first in New Jersey Monthly’s 2013 “Best Places to Live” survey, residents of Mendham Borough enjoy the historic setting of this quaint six-square-mile community--located in Morris County and surrounded on three sides by Mendham Township, with Bernardsville (Somerset County) to the south--plus the conveniences of a walkable downtown featuring boutique retail shopping and dining options, like the historic Black Horse Inn and Tavern. Other nearby stores located in the Village Shopping Center include a supermarket, pharmacy, and a hardware store as well as additional specialty retailers.

Traditions abound in Mendham Borough, with annual events that bring residents together to meet and mingle.  Music is in the air during the summer concert series and outdoor movie nights, when neighbors picnic in Borough Park.  The annual Labor Day Carnival and Parade is capped off by fireworks that signals it’s back-to-school season.  In December, kids and adults alike bundle up and sip hot cocoa as they warm their hands at the annual 12th Night Bonfire of Christmas trees, organized by the volunteer fire department.

Many children walk to the Borough’s public schools, Hilltop Elementary and Mountain View Middle School, greeted along the way by crossing guards whose smiles are familiar to all after their many years of service.  The West Morris Mendham High School is also located in Mendham, drawing students from Mendham Borough and Mendham Township, as well as the neighboring communities of Chester Borough, Chester Township and Washington Township.
