6 beds | 5.1 baths | 1.8 Acres | MLS/ID#: 3447736

The village of Basking Ridge has long drawn residents to this community with its appealing Currier and Ives town center. Lined with quaint shops and restaurants, it defines what a 'hometown' should be as it welcomes all to stop and visit a while. To be within a short stroll of its heart is a blessing, and this classic 1906 residence benefits from its location. Now extensively renovated and updated, it offers a modern lifestyle while its bones echo the traditional architectural heritage of Basking Ridge.

The 1.8 acre grounds are level and include a spacious front lawn, perfect for games of all types.  A new garage was built in 2015 that includes a walk-up storage area. High ceilings and lovely moldings mark the interior of the home, where well-proportioned rooms lead in an easy flow from the formal dining room, through the broad foyer to the front-to-back living room. The kitchen sits at the rear of the house and links to the den/office often used for TV. Three generous bedrooms on the second floor include the stunning master suite with a new full bath, large sitting/dressing room and a versatile sunroom that began life as a sleeping porch.

Reminiscent of the homes from that era, the third floor is accessed from an open staircase and offers the same quality of finishing as the second floor. Here two bedrooms and a bath situated off a handsome loft can function in any number of ways.  But the most special aspect of this lovely property is the full one-bedroom apartment that exists on the main floor and includes a separate entry. Ideal as a guest suite with its own kitchen, it could also return to use as a small professional office if a "professional office" variance is obtained from the town.

The beguiling village sets the tone for the larger township of Bernards, known for its award-winning public schools, easy train access to Manhattan and proximity to commuter Routes 287 and 78. Additional shopping is available in nearby Bernardsville, including two supermarkets, and the Mall at Short Hills is a mere 20-minute drive for an extensive array of designer shops and large department stores.

Bernards Twp. (Basking Ridge), NJ real estate market

Basking Ridge in Bernards Township has retained its small-town charm for over 200 years. Most of the shops, restaurants, and services along tree-lined South Finley Avenue are located in historic 19th-century houses. In fact, the downtown area has so much history that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

Bernards Township was originally formed by Royal Charter as Bernardston Township. The name Bernards Township was given to the area in 1760 by King George II to honor Sir Francis Bernard, Provincial Governor of New Jersey from 1758 to 1760. It was incorporated as Bernards Township in 1798. Basking Ridge, Liberty Corner, Lyons, and West Millington are located within Bernards Township, while Martinsville is split between Bernards and Bridgewater Townships.

Even though maps indicate that Basking Ridge is a small commercial district in the northeast section of Bernards, about 95% of the township is referred to as Basking Ridge and has a Basking Ridge postal address. The only major parts of Bernards that do not have Basking Ridge addresses are the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lyons and Liberty Corner, a small historic district in the southern portion of the township.

The Bernards Township municipal building on Collyer Lane is housed in a circa 1912 brick Tudor mansion detailed with French pocket doors, maple and mahogany paneling, and marble fireplaces. The house and its 28 acres were sold to the township by John Jacob Astor VI for $140,000 in 1968.
