Sublime Brick Front Colonial at The Summit

The Summit in Basking Ridge is an established neighborhood of traditional and contemporary homes set along quiet, winding streets. Amid this premier collection of luxury residences is an updated brick front Colonial that effortlessly supports multi-generational living. Arranged on three finished levels, the beautifully detailed 3,800-plus square-foot home offers six bedrooms and five full baths plus an amazing finished lower level with guest suite. A huge rear deck with shade gazebo overlooks 0.66-acre of open and wooded property. Extensive hardscapes and colorful landscaping surround this classic residence in the heart of the Somerset Hills.

Approached by a paver drive to a paver stone turnaround and parking court, the home’s stunning architectural lines hint at the elegance inside. Double doors with leaded glass inserts reveal the granite-floored foyer featuring a staircase to the upper and lower levels as well as sightlines into some of the primary gathering spaces.

Flanking the foyer are formal living and dining rooms, each fitted with contrast bordered hardwood floors and extensive millwork. The living room is anchored by a raised hearth brick fireplace and adjacent to a home office tucked behind a set of French doors, which can easily serve as a first floor bedroom with near-by full bath. Ideally sited for entertaining, the banquet-sized dining room offers a pass-through window from the chef’s kitchen.

Highlights of the epicurean-inspired kitchen include a center island with breakfast bar seating, cherry cabinetry, granite countertops, granite flooring and a granite-topped dining peninsula overlooking the sun-splashed breakfast room and step-down family room. Spanning the rear of the home, the windowed conservatory/breakfast room also contains a spacious sitting area and French sliding glass doors to the deck. In the vaulted ceiling family room, distinctive design features such as skylights, hardwood floors, wall sconces and a raised hearth floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace lend character to this inviting space.

Upstairs, a sophisticated master suite lined in crown moldings adjoins a skylit master bath featuring a platform soaking tub, clear glass door shower and granite-topped double sink vanity. Three more spacious bedrooms, all with hardwood floors, share the updated full bath.

The up-to-the minute design of the finished walk-out lower level creates an entertainment-friendly area with generous living and gathering rooms. There is a stylish wet/bar kitchenette with microwave, refrigerator and icemaker, a coffered ceiling dining area, a media room accented in stacked stone with large-screen television, game room and music room. The private guest suite adjoining a full, updated bath is ideal for an extended family living arrangement. There is an additional light-filled carpeted bedroom also with double closets and dressing area.

Basking Ridge is located in Bernards Township, an area known for its peaceful scenery and luxurious estate homes as well as proximity to major roadways and Midtown Direct train service to Manhattan. Excellent public and private schools, outstanding recreation, world class shopping and fine restaurants define this sought-after part of the state.

Bernards Twp. (Basking Ridge), NJ real estate market

Basking Ridge in Bernards Township has retained its small-town charm for over 200 years. Most of the shops, restaurants, and services along tree-lined South Finley Avenue are located in historic 19th-century houses. In fact, the downtown area has so much history that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

Bernards Township was originally formed by Royal Charter as Bernardston Township. The name Bernards Township was given to the area in 1760 by King George II to honor Sir Francis Bernard, Provincial Governor of New Jersey from 1758 to 1760. It was incorporated as Bernards Township in 1798. Basking Ridge, Liberty Corner, Lyons, and West Millington are located within Bernards Township, while Martinsville is split between Bernards and Bridgewater Townships.

Even though maps indicate that Basking Ridge is a small commercial district in the northeast section of Bernards, about 95% of the township is referred to as Basking Ridge and has a Basking Ridge postal address. The only major parts of Bernards that do not have Basking Ridge addresses are the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lyons and Liberty Corner, a small historic district in the southern portion of the township.

The Bernards Township municipal building on Collyer Lane is housed in a circa 1912 brick Tudor mansion detailed with French pocket doors, maple and mahogany paneling, and marble fireplaces. The house and its 28 acres were sold to the township by John Jacob Astor VI for $140,000 in 1968.
