Visit the circa 1772 Dutch Colonial Jacobus Vanderveer House in Bedminster this weekend or next to celebrate the 16th Annual Colonial Christmas in one of the area’s most historic homes, which is beautifully decorated for the holidays. Special events begin with a tree lighting on Friday, November 23 at 7pm and continue throughout the weekend as well as the first weekend in December. The Jacobus Vanderveer House is located at 3055 River Road in Bedminster.
This circa 1772 Dutch Colonial home opens its wreath-clad doors Saturday and Sunday, November 24 and 25 and Saturday and Sunday, December 1and 2. Hours are from 10am to 4pm daily. The event features tours of the museum decorated for the holidays by Gail Whiting of Design Consultants, Lynn and Jessica Angelone of Angelone’s Florist, Flowers on the Ridge, and Camelot Construction; plus holiday shopping with boutique merchants and artisans; Colonial musicians, re-enactors and crafters; pony rides provided by Dapple Hill Farm; military demonstrations by Lambs Artillery Company; Santa visits; gingerbread house workshops for children; and a special exhibit from the Knox Museum in Thomaston, Maine.
Admission is $10 for adults, $5 children 6-12, free to Museum members and children 5 and under. Proceeds from the Colonial Christmas benefit exhibit development, historical interpretations and educational programs at the Jacobus Vanderveer House & Museum.
The Jacobus Vanderveer House and Museum was the headquarters of General Henry Knox during the winter of 1778-79 and the only surviving building associated with the Pluckemin Artillery Cantonment, America’s first military academy. A State and National Historic Site, the Vanderveer house interprets 18th century Dutch Colonial life through the Vanderveer and Knox families and underscores the Pluckemin Cantonment’s role in helping the Continental Army to defeat the British during the Revolutionary War.
