It’s that time of year again, a fun-filled day of the year so many Chatham residents look forward to…the Fishawack Festival is set for Saturday, June 10 and a great line-up of musicians, dancers, comedians and storytellers will perform on three stages and at a few “pop up” locations. This annual event brings thousands of people to downtown Chatham for a lively day. In addition to entertainment, the day includes a food court; car show; a strawberry festival hosted by Ogden Memorial Church; an outdoor pub; vendors; a Fishawack Run sponsored by the Jaycees; displays; children’s activities including a petting zoo and fun zone; a stained glass window tour; an art contest and juried art show. It concludes with a showing of the animated movie musical “Sing” beginning around 8:30 p.m. at Railroad Plaza South. Established in 1971, the Fishawack Festival is a rain or shine event.
Live entertainment on the Gazebo Stage in Reasoner Park will run from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. On the schedule are the Chatham Community Band, performers from Dance Innovations in Chatham Township, and Master Byung Uk Kim, owner of World’s Champion K Tae Kwon Do in Chatham with his students. Folk singer Kathy Byers of Chatham will perform her original children’s songs. Michael O’Connor, an Elvis tribute artist for four decades, and Asbury Fever, a band that celebrates the music of the Jersey Shore from the 1970s and ‘80s, also are on the schedule.
Behind the Curve Comedy will perform on the Gazebo Stage. Pop-up entertainers include Simon Mandal of Bernardsville, a magician and comedian, and Sherry Lange, who will tell about the Lenni-Lenape Indians. The Morris County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit will give a demonstration at Borough Hall. Scheduled in a stage at The Library of the Chathams located at 214 Main Street are Jeff Webb, a solo guitarist and singer from Madison; a flute ensemble performance; and a talk on “The History of Chatham Community Players” by Mara Lundstrom. This takes place in the Lundt Meeting Room on the lower level of the library.
The festival’s unusual name comes from an old Lenni-Lenape term for a point on the Passaic River they called the Fishawack Crossing near the Fishawack Trail. Today, that ancient Indian trail is Chatham’s Main Street.
