In Italy, the term Gran Fondo translates to Big Ride or Big Endurance. Now a popular event stateside, this biking event on Sunday, September 9 begins and ends in Morristown. Named the “Top Gran Fondo in the U. S.” for 2015-2018, it is similar to the Gran Fondo rides of Europe but showcases the unique and scenic roads of Morris County while including great local specialty foods. The event brings all the excitement of a mass-participation ride—not a race-- to all levels of cyclists.
The ride features timed hill climbs with all the festive culture of European tour mountain climbs. Each route will have a king of the mountain (KoM) and queen of the mountain (QoM), and there will be overall KoM and QoM awards. There are five categories with a range of mileage for cyclists to choose from. The Gran Fondo NJ is 107 miles with 8,847 feet of climbing. MiGran Fondo NJ is 75 miles with 6,000 feet of climbing; Medio Fondo NJ is 62 miles with 5,220 feet of climbing; Piccolo Fondo NJ is 42 miles with 3,412 feet of climbing and Breve Fondo NJ is 18 miles with 1,416 feet of climbing. All riders will be awarded a finisher’s medal at the end of the ride.
Cyclers’ rest stops will be stocked with cycling-specific energy drinks and food to keep riders energized for the entire ride, as well as a wide assortment of featured foods (, gelato, wood-fired pizza and more). Each rest stop is different and unique, and features entertainment and activities. Cyclists can stop and enjoy all the activities at the various rest stops or take advantage of the ‘express line’ for quick refueling and other ride necessities.
The Gran Fondo NJ is just one of the events that make this part of New Jersey such a popular place to live and work. If you would like to learn more about homes for sale in Morristown, luxury real estate in Morris County or luxury homes in Morristown, contact Turpin at 877-788-7746.
