This Saturday, May 19 marks the 258th anniversary of the Charter of Bernardston with a Charter Day Street Fair and Festival in Basking Ridge. This rain or shine event features shows, rides, games, food, entertainment and more. Charter Day commemorates the Saturday, May 24, 1760 anniversary of the granting of a Township Charter by King George II of England to establish Bernardston Township, which is today’s Bernards Township. This act was a courtesy for-- and in appreciation of-- the services of Sir Francis Bernard who was Royal Governor of New Jersey from 1758 to 1760. Thousands of visitors are expected to celebrate the day which begins with the Town Crier conducting the opening ceremonies on the downtown Green at 11am. This annual event coordinated by the Bernards Township Recreation Department is a fun and festive day with food, games, children’s rides, vendors, art displays, service groups and reminders of history in the heart of downtown Basking Ridge.
