Kingwood Township History

Established in 1746, Kingwood is rural in nature with many active farms and protected green space. At its westernmost portion, it borders the Delaware River from Byram to Frenchtown, and it extends to Alexandria and Franklin Townships to the north and east. It comprises about 35 square miles of rolling landscapes and unspoiled views of some of the prettiest parts of Hunterdon County. As expansive as it is, Kingwood's population is relatively small with about 3,800 residents.

Within Kingwood are several small villages that were settled well over 100 years ago. The village of Kingwood is located near the center of the township. Byram is a village on the Delaware River and consists mainly of summer homes overlooking the shores of Bucks County, Pennsylvania across the river.

Kingwood Township Neighborhoods

The winding roads and meandering byways in Kingwood Township are dotted with old homes, schools, churches and farms dating back to the 1700s and 1800s. Some of the colorful local roadway names include Tumble Falls Road, Whiskey Lane, Federal Twist Road, Featherbed Lane, Stompf Tavern Road, Horseshoe Bend Road and Muddy Run. While the community is proud of its longstanding history it also is very welcoming to new residents. A variety of annual events like a Fishing Derby, Community Day and Tree Lighting connect friends and neighbors throughout the year. Travel to Frenchtown and celebrate Bastille Day on July 14, a favorite tradition in this riverfront borough.

Located about 70 miles west of New York City, many home buyers seek weekend retreats from metropolitan living in Kingwood, whether it's a captivating antique home for sale or a property with land for growing their own vegetables and flowers. Kingwood is minutes from the charming shops, art galleries and eateries in the Frenchtown, attracting day-trippers and locals. Or take advantage of recreational pursuits on the Delaware River like hiking, tubing, canoeing, kayaking, or simply enjoying a picnic along the river's edge.

Kingwood Township Transportation

Kingwood is about 14 miles from Clinton which accesses Interstate 78 for commuters. Route 202 is a short distance from Kingwood, and many residents use this roadway if they work in area business campuses, at government-related agencies in Trenton, or for companies in and around the Princeton corridor.

Trans-Bridge Bus Lines offers service from Front Street in Frenchtown to Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan. It also has direct service from Frenchtown to Newark Liberty and JFK International Airports.

Kingwood Township Schools

Students from kindergarten through grade eight attend Kingwood Township Elementary School on Route 519 in Frenchtown. The school fosters a learning environment that focuses on students reaching their highest potential academically, physically, emotionally and socially.

Eighth-grade students from Hunterdon County can apply to the tuition-free Hunterdon County Vocational School District offering career and technical education at its campuses in Raritan Township and at programs in local high schools.

High school students attend Delaware Valley Regional High School at 19 Senator Stout Road in Frenchtown with classmates from Alexandria, Holland and Kingwood Townships as well as Frenchtown and Milford Boroughs. Enrollment in 2020 was 728 students.

In 2017, the high school was certified as a "Future Ready School NJ," the only school in Hunterdon County to earn this recognition in the inaugural cycle. The Future Ready School NJ certification program recognizes "New Jersey schools that are dedicated to best preparing their students for success in college, career and citizenship in the digital age."

Raritan Valley Community College serves students from Hunterdon and Somerset Counties, offering over 65 associate degrees and certificates. In addition, customized training programs and non-credit courses are available for those seeking personal and professional development. The College is committed to offering a quality and affordable education through effective teaching, liaison with the community's businesses and state-of-the-art technology.

Kingwood Township Local Attractions

Kingwood Township Park at 200 Union Road in Frenchtown is a 47-acre space with nine ballfields, a playground, picnic area, pavilion, bocce court and concession stand. A sand volleyball court, two horseshoe and shuffleboard areas were added in 2006.

Horseshoe Bend Park at 178 Horseshoe Bend Road in Frenchtown takes in picturesque views of the Delaware River Valley from it 752 acres. Activities include horseback riding, hiking or biking on 11 miles of trails and bird watching. The parkland adjoins an additional 500 acres of open space and preserved parkland.

Melnyk Farm Property on Union Road features a walking trail along Lockatong Creek joining the Kingwood Township Park, the Kingwood Township School, a pond, farm fields and the township's garage and recycling center.

The D & R Canal State Park in Frenchtown has towpaths along the canal for walking or biking as well as launch areas for kayaks, tubes and canoes.

Uhlerstown-Frenchtown Bridge allows you to walk from New Jersey to Pennsylvania and back in the few minutes it takes to meander along this truss bridge's pedestrian walkway.

Fun Fact #1 About Kingwood Township
The Devil's Tea Table is a rock formation located in a limited-access area of Kingwood about 250 feet above the Delaware River. On its level summit sits a 12 foot-high rock shaft with an exaggerative top that resembles an old one-legged table.
