Mount Hope Mine was among the most productive iron mines in New Jersey and operated for nearly 250 years before its closure in the 1970s. The iron ore extracted from the area helped fuel the state's industrial growth and linked Rockaway to the greater Morris Canal network.

Early settlers, primarily of English and Dutch descent, established forges and small communities around the mines. Through the 20th century, the township transitioned from a mining hub to a residential community, with suburban expansion following the construction of Interstate 80 and Route 15.
